We left South Dakota around 8:45 this morning. Destination Yellowstone!!! Ronnie drove the first 3 hours and then I took the wheel. Why is it that every time it's my turn to drive there is something funky going on?? This time it was a beautifully scenic route through the mountains. The inclines weren't terribly bad (for the most part)...but the descents were, to put it mildly...horrific! I am scared of heights. That being said, we were on a narrow, two lane "highway" making zigzags around corners with very low (or no) guard rails and very, VERY steep drop-offs. One turn took me by surprise and I MAY have uttered a profane exclamation as I looked out and saw NOTHING out of the windshield . Just empty space. Coming downhill I had to ride my brakes until they overheated and started to smell like they were burning. Keep in mind that the RV is no light-weight vehicle...AND we were pulling a car along behind it. That's a lot of weight "helping" you get down the hill. With the sharp turns, well, suffice it to say that I need a massage to get rid of the knots in my neck!
When we stopped for gas Ronnie took over driving again and drove the 90 minutes or so left to get us to Yellowstone. It's a good think he drove because I kept taking pictures of fabulous scenery. Absolutely gorgeous! Snow-capped mountain peaks, rushing streams, waterfalls, wildlife, rock formations....
After setting up camp we did some laundry, took our showers and returned to the RV to rest and relax and see what tomorrow holds in store. Regardless of what it is, in this scenery, it is bound to be wonderful!
