After a night of R&R we got up and headed out for another day of taking in the sights of South Dakota. We started out in Sturgis. This town is packed with people each August as they host the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Prior to and after this rally it is a dead town! There are businesses that actually only open for the rally and are closed the rest of the year. There were a couple of souvenir shops open, along with the Harley-Davidson dealership, but not much of anything else. We walked down the main street and shopped and were back in the car in less than a hour.
From Sturgis we drove to Deadwood. We had dinner at a restaurant/casino called Mustang Sally's. Yeah, now try to get that song out of your head! Great burgers, though!
After filling our tummies we boarded a bus for a tour that took us to Mt. Moriah Cemetary...where both Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are at rest today. We learned that Wild Bill was only in town 62 days before he was shot in the back by someone seeking revenge for the death of his brothers. This town today survives on the reputation that Wild Bill brought to town with him. After the tour we visited the Silverado Casino where we "donated to the South Dakota economy."
Storms were moving into the area so we headed back to the RV through heavy fog. Once back at camp we did as much prep work as possible to head out the next morning for Wyoming. South Dakota was awesome, but Yellowstone is calling out to us!
