Day 4: June 10, 2013

Today was a loooonnnnggg day...but a good one. We started the day off at Mt. Rushmore. Though my pictures surely don't look any different than the millions of other pictures that have been taken there, they are special. They are mine...of our experience...as seen through our eyes. To see this tremendous artistic stone rendering is to have your breath taken away. It is awe-inspiring. I must have taken 50-75 pictures of the site. I feel honored to have gotten to see this in my lifetime.

From Mt. Rushmore we headed over to Custer State Park. Along the way we drove a dog-leg path through the mountains along one lane roads and through one lane tunnels. You actually had to honk had your horn so anyone coming from the other direction could hear and know to wait until you were through. At CSP we had "the buffalo experience." They were just lazing around a few yards off the road! Yep, Kodak moment again. And then there were the donkeys! They didn't even get off the road!! In fact, they wandered from car to car sticking their heads in if they thought you had food. We fed them Keebler Fudge Grahams. We were quite popular and I thought one donkey was going to open the door and get in the car with us!!

From Custer State Park we headed back toward the RV stopping by the Crazy Horse memorial along the way. Again, a masterpiece on a mountain! The intricate detail involved in these carvings amazes me. This particular memorial will not be finished in our lifetime. There is still so much to be done. It has been a work in progress for 50 years and all that is completed is the face. There is much more to go.

We returned to the RV exhausted. It was an awesome day full of wonderful sights, but we were worn out. We lay around watching television until time for showers and bed. Sleep was welcome this night!
