For more years than I care to recall I watched Jack Hanna on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He was on frequently and he always brought some of his animals from the San Diego Zoo. The birds would flap around...the monkeys crawl around, the tigers...well, you get the picture. Since that first time I have had an insatiable desire to visit the San Diego Zoo.
We did that. On Monday. I'm just now blogging about it because it has taken me that long to recover from the day. And I do mean "day." We arrived at the zoo about 9:15. It opens at 9:00. We didn't want to seem too eager! We roamed all over that zoo...uphill and downhill and around in circles and on the skytram...for 7 1/2 hours! We saw lots of animals. Some were sleeping, some were playing, one was eating his own poop. We saw the most playful panda ever. Cuteness in action. We say one angry monkey. Angry because some idiot mother was letting her kids stand on the wall and bang on the glass right at his face, but that's a blog for another time. We saw animals we had never even heard of along with the lions and tigers and bears, etc. We had an awesome time! The zoo goes on for acres and I think we walked every one of them. I love zoos if the the habitats are fairly natural rather than cage-like. This zoo was incredible and the weather was perfect. The zoo had a three day old baby panda (that we didn't get to see) and not one but four baby giraffes. Some of the big cats were housed in habitats that put them literally within about 2 feet of the people. It was an incredible experience.
At the end of the day we were exhausted, but so very glad we went!
