There are great stretches in Kansas where there is nothing but farmland. While it is rather plain, it is also pretty in its simplicity. We awoke early this morning so we got an early and leisurely start to our day of driving and our view of this simple landscape.
Again, Ronnie drove the first leg of this journey which left me free to do whatever. He took us from Kansas into Nebraska. Along the way we were privy to weathered farmhouses, hundreds of cattle and horses and wide open stretches of farmland...and plenty of rain. It rained almost the whole time he drove.
After lunch I took over the driving and almost immediately we encountered fair skies. The drawback, however, was the strong, gusting winds that I had to fight almost the entire four hours that I drove. The farther we got into Nebraska the prettier it got. Rolling hillsides of lush, green grasses...when I dared to take my eyes off the road for more than a second.
Leaving Nebraska we entered South Dakota. We meandered through the Black Hills National Forest and encountered a few buffalo along the way. They are protected and apparently know it because they stroll leisurely along the roadway.
We pulled into our campsite around 6:30 pm and set things up to stay a few days. There is a chill in the air and we have the windows open. Later we will make our plans for tomorrow. We will be here through Tuesday night so we have time to wander and enjoy. We will see what tomorrow brings!
Till then...
~cheers!
